Michael Spiegel

Mr. Spiegel is one of two founding members of the law firm of Rains and Spiegel, LLC and is currently the managing member. Since becoming an attorney in September of 2000 he has actively engaged in the general practice of civil and criminal law including: felony/misdemeanor/municipal cases, family law, business litigation, commercial litigation, personal injury, general tort litigation and construction litigation. He also receives and accepts appointments to act as a Special Prosecuting Attorney in State Court and also has served as a Guardian Ad Litem when appointed by the court. Mr. Spiegel predominately practices in Missouri State and Municipal Courts, but is also licensed in the State of Kansas.

In 1997, Mr. Spiegel received his B.S. Degree from Central Missouri State University. He continued his education at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law and received his Juris Doctor degree in May 2000. During law school, he worked in the private sector in the areas of complex litigation focusing on products liability cases, contract litigation, and medical malpractice defense.

After graduating from law school, Mr. Spiegel accepted a position as the law clerk for the Honorable Vernon Scoville and then continued as the law clerk for the Honorable Jeffrey Bushur. Mr. Spiegel then became an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Jackson County, Missouri, where he spent approximately five years and practiced exclusively in the area of criminal prosecution for state felony and misdemeanor cases. During his time in the Prosecutor’s office he handled jury and non-jury trials of criminal cases, ranging from speeding tickets through first degree murder cases, until he moved to the private practice of law in December of 2005.

Mr. Spiegel is a member of the Eastern Jackson County Bar Association, the Missouri Bar Association, and the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association. He has been published in the “Bench Book of Missouri Trial Judges” and co-wrote Missouri statute 568.052, which made it illegal to leave children unattended in motor vehicles. During his career Mr. Spiegel has been recognized by the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office as one of the “Attorneys of Year” in 2002 and as “Change Agent” in 2005. In 2011 Mr. Spiegel was nominated for the coveted Lon O. Hocker Award for trial excellence.

In addition to practicing law, Mr. Spiegel volunteers his time with various charity organizations, and has taught classes to various police agencies in the areas of evidence-based prosecution and prosecuting cases without a victim’s cooperation.
